ENVIRONMENTAL INSERT :

The Belgian Blue’s greenhouse gas emissions are low: the carbon footprint of the breed is one of the lowest among beef cattle according to the Boerenbond (Flemish Farmers’ Association). The breed is known for its feed efficiency. The high daily weight gain and very high meat yield of BB cattle are the main reasons for this lower carbon footprint.
The BB is thus an excellent combination: high meat production with minimal impact on the climate.
Emissions for the Belgian Blue are around 21 kg CO2 equivalent per kg of meat, while for other breeds they range from 27.5 to 48.5 kg. Source: Boerenbond.be
In crossbreeding, therefore, and particularly in the case of grazing (fields are an important place for carbon storage), the BB’s carbon footprint remains low compared with other beef breeds!
